Hi,
You might wonder why a new tourist guide on the web?
I know, put this way, it may sound like a cliché, but nonetheless,
it's not impossible that you asked yourself the question if you arrived
here more or less randomly.
The answer is quite simple. I love to travel, and I do it as much as I
can (which is not that much as I'm currently a broke student, I hope that
will change in the future.) Anyway, I
love to travel, but usually I'm pretty disappointed with tourist guides.
Don't get me wrong, some are very well done and more complete than this
site will ever be (as long as it's being maintained in a non-professional
way, and I think it will stay this way, and it's not even the purpose
anyway). I'm myself a big fan of Lonely
Planet.
Usually,
what these tourist guides do is to send someone to a destination, they
visit the place quite quickly, collecting as many descriptions of places
as they can in the least amount of time possible and that's it. They don't
really get to know the places they go. This makes sense, but it's a pity.
Someday, out of curiosity, I checked out a guide about the place
where I lived at the time (Toulouse, France) and I got really
surprised by the places that were selected in the guide. They were places I never
went for various reasons. And none of the places where I liked to hang out were
listed. Had I been a tourist in this city, and had I followed the guide, I
would have had a quite bad experience of the place, but I would also have
had an inaccurate view of what the city was.
So, this guide is some sort of
addition to your usual guide. The
destinations described here are well known by the people describing them,
either because they're currently living there, or because they go there
often, or because they used to live there not a long time ago.
Obviously, just a few destinations will be available (but with time I
hope to collect more and more destinations thanks to more and more
contributors), but their descriptions will be as accurate as possible and
the persons who describe them will tell you why they like a place or not
and they will also provide information about them, as personal tastes play
a huge factor in all of this.
Also, when and where it applies, special
sections will be devoted to certain things. Mostly cultural things (like
the relationship between a book or a movie and a city), but not only (if
you have ideas, do not hesitate to share them).
The whole idea of this site is to be a cooperative and person-oriented
site. Please, also note that this site is at its very beginning,
thus the small quantity of information and destinations so far.
And as long as I haven't sold my soul to
the Great Capital (thing which might happen if this site becomes
really popular someday), every contribution is based on goodwill, and
is free.
All that being said, if
you think you could be a contributor, don't hesitate to contact us
through the e-mail address at the end of every page. I need you! ;-)
David.
