Restaurants
(by Emlyn)

There are a lot of restaurants in Liège, of all sorts; French, Chinese, Mexican, Italians, etc. Still, the most interesting ones are the ones serving local cuisine.

A word about it. The most typical dishes are the "boulets" (some sort of meatloaf served with a sauce made with apple syrup), the liégeoise salad (beans, potatoes, onions, lard with a vinegar sauce and grilled sausages), rabbit with prune and beer sauce, pork kidneys in cider sauce, and "jambonneau" (some sort of ham). All of these with old-fashioned French fries. On the dessert side, one must mention the Liège waffle (with sugar and cinnamon), the "rombosses" (some sort of deep fried apple), the rice pie (not unalike rice pudding, but in the form of a pie) and the sugar pie (a pie made with sugar and eggs).

  • Amon Nanesse: Rue du Stalon 1, behind City Hall.
Seen from the outside, this building isn't much to look at, but inside the rustic decoration give a warm atmosphere to the place (apparent bricks on the walls, blue marble on the floor, a well, etc...) The menu says it all: "We don't cook grande cuisine but good food" and it is totally true. One can find all the traditional local specialties. It is my favorite restaurant in town as much for the atmosphere as for the food. One complain though: the service is extremely slow, so it's better to go there with somebody with whom you can have interesting conversations. The bar is also famous for serving a great variety of "péket," the typical miner's drink, made from juniper alcohol, usually mixed with lemon juice.

  • As Ouhès: Place du Maché 19-21, facing City Hall.
If Amon Nanesse is full or if you don't have much time, this place is an excellent second choice.

  • Le Bistrot d’en Face: Rue de la Goffe 8.
Here we're dealing from Lyons cuisine, but in the end it's not that different from the Liégeoise one, especially because they're both rich and tasty.

  • Le Bruit Qui Court: Boulevard de la Sauvenière, 142.
The building used to be a bank (one can reserve the vault for banquets or lunch meetings) You can find quiches, lasagna and various salads. The place is somewhat preppy.

  • La Cueca: Rue des Célestines, 6.
Latin restaurant located in the "
Carré". The atmosphere is both warm and relaxed. The food is mostly Mexican and Cuban. Prices are quite low. I enjoy coming back there every time.

  • Le Gandhi: Rue Gretry, 110.
Located in the outskirts of the city, in the
Longdoz neighborhood (close to rue Natalis), this little known Indian restaurant is really good. It's best to make reservations as there's little room. It's a very enjoyable place.

  • L’Industrie: Rue Saint Gilles, 6.
The place to go to eat mussels with French fries among other local foods. My personal favorite being honey "
    jambonneau".

  • Le Kyoto: in Rocourt, Chaussée de Tongres, 424 (take exit 33 on the E40).
The only Japanese restaurant in the area. And like any Japanese steakhouse do not forget to ask to be seated at a "cooking table" (make reservations if necessary). The food is very good, but quite pricy, a complete dinner will cost you about 50 Euros. But it's worth it.

  • La Part des Anges: Rue des Clarisses, 46.
A quite unique place, the atmosphere is quite stylish and the food original. The best advice I can give you is to be adventurous and order the "surprise meal." For a decent price, the chef will show you his skills according to his mood of the day. A culinary experience one must live at least once.

  • En Roture.
This is not the name of a restaurant but of a neighborhood located in the Outremeuse heart. In between rue Jean d’Outremeuse and rue Puits-en-Sock, this narrow street is surrounded by a number of very interesting restaurants. One goes there the same way one goes to the market. You stroll in the street until you find what interests you that day. A night there is always friendly and fun.

  • Taverne Tchantchès et Nanesse : Rue Grande Bêche, 35.
    I
n the Outremeuse area, near Place Delcour this tavern with a warm decoration has a very interesting collection of traditional
Liégeois puppets (Tchantchès and Nanesse being the most famous characters of traditional Liégeois puppet theater). The food is good and the atmosphere too.
