Culture
(by David)

Cinema

  • Hippodrome State Theatre: 25 SE 2nd Place.

Located downtown, it's both a movie theater and a stage theater. They show mostly independent and foreign movies, as well as many documentaries. One of the most important places in town from a cultural point of view.

  • Eastern Federal - Royal Park Stadium 16 : 3702 Newberry Road.

The main theater in town. They show almost exclusively Hollywood movie, for better and worse.

  • Regal Gainesville 14 : 3101 SW 35 Blvd.

The other main theater, they tend to play more independent and foreign movies than the Royal Park.

  • Reitz Union Cinema : University of Florida, J. Wayne Reitz Union, 2nd floor, Museum Road.

This is the UF theater, the movies that are being shown there are very very varied. They show mainstream movies a few months after they were first released (for really cheap; $1 or $2). They also show many foreign movies, and that's a good thing.

Stage Theatre

  • Constans Theatre: Nadine McGuire Theatre and Dance Pavillion, University of Florida

The main stage of the UF school of theatre and dance, great plays by great people.
(note also the existence of smaller rooms for the less official plays).

  • Hippodrome State Theatre: 25 SE 2nd Place.

It's a rare thing to have such a stage theater in a city the size of Gainesville. They even show big plays once in a while.

  • University of Florida Center of Performing Arts: 315 Hull Road, University of Florida.

Where a lot of shows, plays, major guest speakers come.

Museums

  • Florida Museum of Natural History: Hull Road, University of Florida.

Extremely instructive, and interesting especially concerning the ecology of Florida as well as its native culture.

  • Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art : Hull Road, University of Florida

The arts museum of the University. A small collection, but a quite impressive one for an American town this size. My favorites are the photograph exhibits as well as the Asian and African arts sections.
