(by
David) Gainesville is not a
tourist place, but still, there are a few things to visit and to see.
-
University of Florida:
Founded in 1853, it's the oldest university in Florida. It moved to
Gainesville after the Civil War. Today it has about 50,000 students and is
one of the biggest university of the country. The campus is really beautiful
and is worth a visit with its historical buildings among lots of green
spaces.
-
The "Duck Pond" area:
The neighborhood located around North East Ave. is
a residential area and might just be the most beautiful part of the city
(one of the oldest ones too). There are better areas to shop (indeed, as
there are no shops in this neighborhood), to party, etc, but it's definitely
the best place to live, if you like places that are calm, walking distance
from downtown and these kinds of things.
-
Graffiti Wall:
On SW 34th Street, just south of SW 2nd
Ave.
This wall, separating the University golf course from the street is the only
place in town where it's legal to write on walls. And people use that right
a lot. It's constantly covered with paintings (rarely artistic though) that
go from personal messages (birthdays, graduations, etc.) to more traditional
graffiti. The paintings change a lot and stay rarely more than a week before
being covered by new ones. There's an exception to this; the center section
of the wall is actually a memorial to the five victims of the serial killer
that terrorized the city in the summer of 1990.
